We are excited to announce Gillespie Gardens, a new housing development within Cordele’s historic Gillespie-Selden district. This project is part of the ongoing neighborhood revitalization efforts by the City of Cordele since 2008.

Gillespie Gardens is located on approximately five acres in the Gillespie-Selden Urban Redevelopment Area. It involves the adaptive reuse of four historic buildings, along with the construction of a three-story building that complements the existing structures. With 53 housing units, Gillespie Gardens will offer a mix of efficiency and 1-, 2-, or 3-bedroom units, catering to individuals and families with incomes below 60% of the area median income.

The Gillespie-Selden Institute, a complex of education and medical buildings, holds significant historical and cultural value. Originally opened as a school for African American children in 1902, it also served as hospitals and a church for injured or homeless African Americans.

Respecting the site’s history and community significance has been a priority for all stakeholders involved in the Gillespie Gardens project. We value the connections and memories of those who graduated from Gillespie and aim to honor this noble place.
